Enclosed Car Transport for Manufacturers: When You Need It and What to Expect

29 Oct, 2026

For most finished vehicles, open transporters do the job. But every manufacturer has moments when a vehicle can’t be seen, can’t be marked and can’t be late: a prototype heading to a test track, a show car bound for an international motor show, a press fleet before embargo lifts. That’s when enclosed car transport stops being a premium option and becomes a requirement.

When manufacturers specify enclosed transport

  1. Prototypes and pre-production vehicles moving between engineering centres, test tracks and homologation sites
  2. Climate and durability testing programmes, from Arctic winter testing to hot-weather trials in southern Europe and North Africa
  3. Clay models, design bucks and concept cars that can’t be driven and must stay unseen
  4. Motor shows, launches and press drives, where vehicles must arrive spotless and on schedule
  5. Premium, limited-edition and high-value stock delivered to dealers or direct to customers
  6. Embargoed vehicles that must stay out of sight until reveal

What “at scale” should mean

Many operators can move one car in a covered trailer. Few can supply enclosed capacity for a 40-car launch fleet, a multi-country test programme or year-round premium distribution. When assessing providers, ask:

  1. Fleet size and mix: single-car, multi-car and tail-lift enclosed transporters, plus open capacity under the same contract
  2. Geographic reach: UK, continental Europe and beyond. Ontime’s enclosed fleet operates from the Arctic Circle to North Africa and Turkey
  3. Specialist loading: low-angle ramps, tail lifts and race transporters for low-clearance and non-running vehicles
  4. Insurance: Ontime carries £5 million cover on each transporter load as standard, with higher cover available
  5. Confidentiality: secure parking, controlled access and drivers who understand embargo protocols
  6. Visibility: live tracking and documented pre- and post-delivery checks

Ontime operates one of Europe’s largest fleet of enclosed transporters, with depots in the UK, Germany and France.

Enclosed and open: one programme

Manufacturers don’t need to choose. A typical OEM programme runs open transporters for volume finished vehicle distribution and enclosed capacity for prototypes, launches and premium units, all under one contract and one data set in the Control Tower.

Beyond the road

Enclosed transport often forms one leg of a longer journey. Prototypes for overseas testing, or show cars for international events, combine enclosed road legs with container or air freight, customs clearance and secure storage between moves. Our enclosed international road freight service covers cross-border moves.

Drivers trained for high-value vehicles

Ontime drivers are trained by our in-house training department, accredited for Driver CPC, in loading, securing and handling prototype, electric and high-performance vehicles.
