What is the world’s fastest car?

You guessed it, this list is packed full of the powerful, high-performance names we know and love. Expect to see entries from McLaren, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bugatti and our personal favourite, Aston Martin.

Most of the big names that are well-versed in churning out supercars have tried their hand at making an absurdly powerful (read: expensive) hypercar at some time in the last decade. But, when it comes to the crunch, even a huge development budget is no match for the expertise and finesse of the small, specialist firms.

In the name of being fair – and purely going off the numbers – our list includes a mix of the two, but we’ve kept it to one headline model per manufacturer. Each car comes from a completely different team of passionate designers, engineers and driving enthusiasts (a word which doesn’t seem worthy, considering the stakes) but all have one thing in common… A burning desire to be the fastest. Plus, a no-holds-barred approach to engineering and a total disregard for the laws of physics as they stand.

  1. Koenigsegg Agera R – 273 mph
  2. Hennessey Venom GT – 270 mph
  3. Bugatti Veyron Super Sport – 268 mph
  4. 9ff GT9-R – 257 mph
  5. SSC Ultimate Aero – 256 mph
  6. Koenigsegg CCR – 242 mph
  7. McLaren F1 – 241 mph
  8. Senvo ST1 – 233 mph
  9. Pagani Huayra – 230 mph
  10. Aston Martin One-77 – 220mph

50 years ago, driving even at 200mph in a road would have been unbelievable – or like something out of a cheesy sci-fi flick. Now, in 2016, Andry Green and the Bloodhound team have set their sights on a new 1,000mph Land Speed Record.

There’s also a handful of high-performance saloon cars that can top a hefty 170mph without (the driver) breaking a sweat. Two of the models in our list breeze 270mph, so we think it’s only a matter of time that a road-ready car can hit 300mph. 2017 anyone?

When it comes to cars and their performance, there is nothing quite exhilarating and electrifying than pure speed. These four-wheeled engineering feats are the finest representations of manufacturing and prove the real passion of the professionals… Plus a serious spurt of adrenaline pumping through your veins.
